SPANISH MACKERAL
SPANISH MACKERAL ARE A FUN SPECIES TO TARGET IN THE SPRING AND FALL DUE TO THEIR SPIRITED FIGHT AND SHEER NUMBERS! WHEN THE MACKERAL ARE MIGRATING THROUGH OUR AREA WE CAN USUALLY FIND THEM CRASHING BAIT SCHOOLS INTO A FRENZY MAKING THEM EASY TO LOCATE AND CATCH. THE SPANISH MACKERAL USUALLY RANGE IN SIZE FROM 2 TO 4 POUNDS AND CAN BE CAUGHT ON A LIVE BAITS, SPOONS, THE FLY ROD, AND EVEN BARE HOOKS ON OCCASION!
A CLOSE RELATIVE TO THE SPANISH MACKERAL IS THE KING FISH. KINGFISH CAN GROW MUCH LARGER THAN SPANISH AND ARE CONSIDERED AN OFFSHORE SPECIES. THOUGH THEY RARELY VISIT THE SHALLOW BAYS, THEY CAN BE CAUGHT AS CLOSE AS 100 YARDS FROM THE BEACH WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT. KINGFISH USUALLY RANGE IN SIZE FROM 5 TO 35 POUNDS AND SOME OF OUR BIGGEST FISH EACH YEAR ARE FOUND ALONG OUR BEACHES. LARGE KINGS ARE COMMONLY REFERED TO AS "SMOKERS" AND CAN EXCEED 50 POUNDS! SPANISH MACKERAL AND SMALL KINGFISH ARE GOOD ON THE GRILL WHILE THE LARGER FISH ARE BEST RELEASED.
